AI tools are currently trending. Tech enthusiasts are donning lobster hats at gatherings, and firms are bringing AI onboard as employees.
Meta's leader, Mark Zuckerberg, finds this evolution exciting, yet he admits these tools aren’t quite user-friendly enough yet.
During Meta's first-quarter financial report call, Zuckerberg noted several AI tools fall short of a critical evaluation.
"There are numerous tools available," he stated. "Yet, few would be suitable for my mother."
These other tools provide a "very promising peek" into what the future might hold, he said, but they lack user-friendliness.
Zuckerberg took OpenClaw, in particular, as an example. Users need to set up a local machine, engage their computer's terminal, and configure the tools manually. "A limited segment of millions globally" can do this setup, he declared, but Meta is aiming for widespread accessibility.
"How do you create an experience that's significantly more refined and approachable?" Zuckerberg pondered. The tool they're working on simply "works seamlessly," he emphasized.
Meeting this informal "mother" benchmark—meaning a product you'd recommend to your mom because it's user-friendly—was more essential than meeting any launch date, Zuckerberg maintained.
On the earnings call, Zuckerberg also discussed his stance on utilizing resources for building coding tools.
Meta's competitors have heavily funded the coding tool arena. OpenAI and Anthropic have crafted Codex and Claude Code.
SpaceX, owning xAI, secured a $60 billion deal to acquire the AI coding firm Cursor.
Zuckerberg stated that Meta was "not necessarily" a company that develops tools for coders, but didn't rule out the possibility of creating a coding tool. It's just not Meta’s primary agenda.
"People often conflate coding with self-improvement more than appropriate," he remarked. "Coding is a component of model enhancement but isn't the sole factor."
